Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (魔法少女リリカルなのは, Mahō Shōjo Ririkaru Nanoha?) is a thirteen episode spin-off of the Triangle Heart series of games and OVAs that aired between October and December of 2004. Nanoha, the magical girl and younger sister of Kyōya and Miyuki, takes precedence here while her sword-wielding siblings are reduced to minor characters. Nanoha is also clearly set in an alternate universe; the late Shirō Fuwa was always named Takamachi and survived his originally fatal injury, new characters such as Fate Testarossa are added, and others, such as Fiasse Crystela, are removed.
A sequel, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, aired between October and December of 2005. A third series, titled Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS began airing on April 1, 2007. There have also been corresponding manga series bridging the story and adding new elements to it, as well as CD dramas.
The series, whilst having some of the traditional trappings of Magical Girl shows, differs in several key ways. First, Nanoha bases its 'magic' on technology in lieu of traditional 'magical' elements of said shows. Second, the series has more carefully crafted choreography than more typical magical girl shows, reflecting the different target demographic (teenage and young adult male viewers rather than the traditional young female audience of the magical girl genre). Third, and perhaps most importantly, the show's story is significantly more emotionally intense than those of other magical girl series, dealing with themes such as social alienation and child abuse.

[edit] Story
Nanoha Takamachi is a 3rd grade elementary school girl. She lives with her parents who run a coffee shop, and her older sister and brother who are in high school and university respectively. Nanoha's regular life changes when she hears a voice calling to her on the way home and ends up rescuing an injured ferret (who is actually a transformed boy called Yūno, an archaeologist from a distant world). She obtains a magical crystal called Raising Heart (レイジングハート, Reijingu Hāto?), and gains magical powers.
After their encounter, Nanoha and Yūno have to collect the twenty-one "Jewel Seeds" (ジュエルシード, Jueru Shīdo?), powerful lost crystals from Yūno's world that grant wishes and are very dangerous when misused. However, Nanoha and Yūno are not the only ones after the Jewel Seeds. So is Fate Testarossa, a foreign girl with sad eyes...

Nanoha Takamachi (高町 なのは, Takamachi Nanoha?)
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura
This sweet grade three student feels that, though she plays a good supporting role in others' lives, unlike the rest of her family and friends, she has no closest friend to turn to and no direction in her own life. However, when she meets Yūno and discovers her strong aptitude for magic, Nanoha activates Raising Heart out of a magical crystal that Yūno was carrying and wholeheartedly carries out her search for the Jewel Seeds. She's slightly dense and much too trusting, but has a tremendous insight that leads her to reach out to Fate.
Yūno Scrya (ユーノ・スクライア, Yūno Sukuraia?)
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi
Yūno is a magic-user from Midchilda, and is the same age as Nanoha. Despite his young age, he worked as an archaeologist and discovered a set of ancient and powerful artifacts (the magical term for this is Lost Logia) known as the Jewel Seeds. When the Time-Space Administration Bureau lost the Jewel Seeds, Yūno went to Earth to track them down; whilst fleeing from monsters, he was injured and transformed himself into a ferret. He acts as Nanoha's familiar, though his true form is that of a regular human being and she did not făurite him.
Fate Testarossa (フェイト・テスタロッサ, Feito Tesutarossa?)
Voiced by: Nana Mizuki
Abused by her ruthless mother, Fate regardless remains blindly and unquestioningly loyal to Precia and carries out her search for the Jewel Seeds. When this search leads her to cross Nanoha, she scorns the naivete of her rival and strikes out against her. However, as Nanoha persists to try to learn her motivation and become her friend, Fate is faced with a shocking truth from everyone around her and must decide what to do with it.
Arf (アルフ, Arufu?)
Voiced by: Natsuko Kuwatani
Fate's outspoken dog-woman familiar. Her distaste of Precia is mutual, but she cannot do anything to protect Fate from her mother. Arf instead takes out her anger on her enemies. She is very kind to Fate and rather protective of her.
Precia Testarossa (プレシア・テスタロッサ, Pureshia Tesutarossa?)
Voiced by: Rei Igarashi
Precia is a mage residing in the Garden of Time. She went insane when her daughter Alicia died. She instructs her daughter Fate to find the Jewel Seeds and beats her ruthlessly when she does not do enough to satisfy her. Precia desperately wants the Jewel Seeds to revive Alicia, to the point that she will not hesitate to remove any obstacles. She was kind and stable once upon a time, but any trace of that is long gone.

[edit] Trivia
Jewel Seed #14 appears two times in both episode 4 and episode 6.
The text in pink under the logo reads "Magical girl lyrical Nanoha. She whispers some words mildly in your heart, and makes your gentle days."
Starting in episode 7, the negru title screen of later, "serious" episodes begins to replace the Raising Heart title screen. However, the Raising Heart screen reappears twice after that.
Because of Nanoha's heavy use of high-firepower ranged attacks, fans have nicknamed her "Demonic Cannon Girl" (魔砲少女, Ma Hō Shōjo?), a play on words since in Japanese it sounds identical to "Magical Girl" (魔法少女, Mahō Shōjo?).
Nanoha is left-handed and consequently is always shown wielding her staff in her left hand.
The magical incantation which Nanoha said in episode 1 to activate Raising Heart is exactly the same as in the autentic game of Mahō Shōjo Lyrical Nanoha Toybox when the Pixie Lindy Harlaown grants her magical powers

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A'S
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (魔法少女リリカルなのは エース, Mahō Shōjo Ririkaru Nanoha Ēsu?) (A's pronounced as Ace) is a thirteen episode sequel to Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, a magical girl alternate universe spinoff of the Triangle Heart series of games and OAVs. A third series, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS, is set for release in 2007.
Like its predecessor, A's bases its 'magic' on technology in lieu of traditional fantezie style of magic. The fight choreography in this series is also notably more like that from the shōnen genre (The attacks often reach mecha proportions) than a typical magical girl show.

A's is set six months after the first series and begins by explaining what has happened in the time between the two series. Nanoha has been constantly practicing her techniques whilst Fate and Arf have remained in the custody of the Time-Space Administration agency, patiently waiting for the results of her trial. Fate and Nanoha have been keeping in atingere by sending video DVDs to each other.
While working on an assignment at home, Raising Heart tells Nanoha that danger is approaching. Nanoha enters battle with the mysterious girl and is injured heavily due to the massive damage that the girl's weapon is capable of inflicting. Fate and Yŭno arrives just in time to save Nanoha from death and battles the girl, but the girl's friends come to join in the battle shortly after. The first battle with the Wolkenritters already showed the power of them and their magical devices.
Throughout this series, Hayate Yagami, the wheelbound girl, was seen frequently with the Wolkenritters. It is not until much later in the series, was it explained. Hayate Yagami is actually the new mistress of the Book of Darkness, thus, became the mistress of the Wolkenritters too. However, she treats them differently from their other previous masters, caring for them as if they were her friends, which is why they showed feelings when they are not supposed to. The reason why she is wheelbound is because the Book of Darkness is eating into her and the Wolkenritters thought that the only way to stop it was to fill up all the 666 pages of Book of Darkness, thus, disobeying Hayate's order to stop hurting people because they had grown to love Hayate.
Nanoha and Fate were oblivious to the fact that Hayate is the mistress of Book of Darkness and had even become friends with her, it was not till they met the Wolkenritters in her hospital ward while visiting her then they realised it was her. This set off a series of events and let Hayate trigger the key of opening the Book of Darkness.

Main article: List of characters in Nanoha
[edit] Main characters
Nanoha Takamachi (高町 なのは, Takamachi Nanoha?)
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura
A sweet girl, perhaps a little too trusting, but has faith in herself and her friends. Nanoha is a rarity in that she comes from Earth but has a surprisingly strong aptitude for magic. Wielding her staff, Raising Heart, she finds her calling in protecting her friends with magic. She awaits the return of her friend, Fate, but it comes just as she is ambushed by Vita for her linker core, and she is thrown into the fray once again.
Fate Testarossa (フェイト・テスタロッサ, Feito Tesutarossa?)
Voiced by: Nana Mizuki
After the events of the previous season, Fate is acquitted as an accessory to her mother's crime and recruited by the Time-Space Administration Bureau. Quiet and reflective, she serves as a contrast to her dearest friend, Nanoha. Her familiar, Arf, and her device, Bardiche, are the only ones that were always there for her. She is adopted by Lindy Harlaown after her abusive, insane mother commits suicide rather than be captured in the first season.
Hayate Yagami (八神 はやて, Yagami Hayate?)
Voiced by: Kana Ueda
Hayate, a sweet wheelchair-bound orphan, is under the care of the Wolkenritter, though they keep their battles from her; she knows that the completion of the Book of Darkness will grant her vast power, but does not want it at the expense of the lives of others. However, the Book of Darkness is feeding off her own life force, causing her paralysis, and will eventually kill her if it is not completed... Hayate and Suzuka become fast friends after Suzuka helps her around the library, which may cause trouble if their respective friends learn that they have been fighting each other.
Yūno Scrya (ユーノ・スクライア, Yūno Sukuraia?)
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi
Yūno is an archaeologist hailing from an alternate world named Mid-childa (ミッドチルダ, Middo Chiruda?). Yūno is also proficient with protective and binding spells and often provides support for Nanoha and the rest of the team. True to his surname, Yūno has exceptional scrying abilities and was able to find a lot of information regarding the Book of Darkness while sifting through the material located within the Infinity Library (無限書庫, Mugen Shoko?).
When traveling on Earth with Nanoha amongst her family and friends, he transforms himself into a ferret, so as to avoid having to explain the events that the two have been through. It's unclear whether this is a natural ability or a spell (see first season notes)
While the relationship that Nanoha and Yūno shares during battles seem to mirror Fate and Arf's relationship, Yūno is not actually Nanoha's familiar as she did not confecționate him. Yūno also has feelings for Nanoha, as confirmed during the epilogue sequence of the series at the end of the final episode. However, it's yet to be seen whether Nanoha views Yūno as anything more than a friend. (As confirmed in the StrikerS introductory manga.)
Arf (アルフ, Arufu?)
Voiced by: Natsuko Kuwatani
Arf is Fate's familiar and is a fox/wolf hybrid in her regular form. However, she no longer assumes this form since it is less intimidating for Fate's friends when she is down on Earth and instead changes into the form of a puppy dog. She is capable of casting both offensive attack spells and support-based binding spells. In major battles, Arf is usually alongside Yūno, acting as support by nullifying the enemies' attack capabilities with their binding spells. She has a 'human' form that is actually more in keeping with a fox demihuman - similar to the catgirls of some other shows.
[edit] Wolkenritter ("Cloud Knights")
Signum (シグナム, Shigunamu?)
Voice by:' Kaori Shimizu)
Signum has a long pink ponytail and appears to be the oldest of the group. Lævatein (Levantine in the fansubs), her chain-link sword, is a powerful weapon that crosses Fate and Bardiche in every battle. Signum, unlike Vita, keeps calm at almost all times and, though she has a strong will to absorb her enemies' Linker Cores into the Book, Signum nonetheless respects their level of power and does not take them lightly. She has an extensive knowledge of how the mind works, which is probably what made her the group's leader, besides her strength.
Shamal (シャマル, Shamaru?)
Voiced by: Ryoka Yuzuki
Shamal, being Yūno's counterpart, does not actually fight, but uses her ring devices to defend, create portals, absorb victims' Linker Cores into the Book of Darkness, and the like. Shamal acts as the 'mother' of the group, doing the shopping, worrying excessively over the others' well-being, and constructing excuses to Hayate as to why they're out so often ("The grocery store doesn't have our brand of olive oil"). She knows that Hayate does not want them to fight anyone for her, but it is still no question that they must.
Vita (ヴィータ, Vīta?)
Voiced by: Asami Sanada
A hot-tempered young redhead with a complex about her rabbit hat. She begins to question why she doesn't remember the fates of her former masters. Always pitted against Nanoha in battles, she uses her mallet, Graf Eisen, to fight. Vita arrogantly refuses to call Nanoha by her real name, always inventing some variation, until she and Nanoha join forces in the final battle.
Zafira (ザフィーラ, Zafīra?)
Voiced by: Kazuya Ichijou
The Wolkenritter's familiar, a large grey wolf. He transforms into a muscular dark-skinned man, and in battles, always finds himself facing Arf.
Other characters that were only shown in A's can be found in the A's section of the character list.

Episode 8 - When Hayate mentions that it'd be nice to spend Christmas with the Wolkenritter, the date on the calendar is shown to be Tuesday, December 13th. This is an accurate representation of December 13th, on the year of 2005, which is when the series was aired.
Episode 13 - During the last part of the opening sequence, there is a sequence of quick cuts of each of the different weapons used in the series. The S2U is switched out and the Durandal is featured instead. The Book of Darkness is also switched to a picture of the Reinforce Staff.
[edit] Manga
A manga adaptation of the story was serialized in Megami Magazine, with a few changes to the storyline, mostly elaborating on the characters. For example, Nanoha must also deal with Raising Heart draining her magical power with every move she makes, and explores how Hayate views the Wolkenritter as her children.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS (魔法少女リリカルなのはStrikerS, Mahō Shōjo Ririkaru Nanoha Sutoraikāzu?) is the third season of the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series. The Nanoha anime was, in turn, a spin-off of the Triangle Heart series of games and OVAs, specifically Triangle Heart 3: Sweet Songs Forever. This season aired shortly after the promotional event "Lyrical Party III" scheduled on April 1, 2007.
StrikerS takes place after the epilogue of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, aired between October and December of 2005. While the epilogue connected A's to a world six years later, StrikerS advances the timeline another four years, where the main characters have gone on to work for the Time-Space Administration Bureau (TSAB) and come upon a new case. The series focuses more on team-based battles and bureaucracy rather than individual rivalry and school life, due to the change in character dynamics.

[edit] Returning characters
Captain Nanoha Takamachi (高町 なのは, Takamachi Nanoha?) (Age 19)
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura
An experienced combat instructor who, with her intelligent device Raising Heart (most people call it Raging Heart) and her best friends, has done great work for the TSAB. Takamachi, commander of the Forward Stars Squad of Lost Property Riot Force 6 (機動六課, Kidō Roku Ka?), despite her sweet and optimistic personality, is an S+ (restricted to AA for routine operations in Lost Property Riot Force 6 due to bureaucratic limitations) rank mage (the third-highest possible ranking) who will use force to subdue someone if absolutely necessary.
Investigator Fate T. Harlaown (フェイト・T・ハラオウン, Feito T Haraoun?) (Age 19)
Voiced by: Nana Mizuki
Fate T. Harlaown is the commander of the Riot Force 6's Forward Lightning Squad and Nanoha's longtime best friend. She is also ranked S+ (restricted to about 2 ranks down for routine operations in Lost Property Riot Force 6 due to bureaucratic limitations), the third highest mage ranking. Fate's birth name comes from the Ferrari Testarossa.
Lieutenant Colonel Hayate Yagami (八神はやて, Yagami Hayate?) (Age 19)
Voiced by: Kana Ueda
Hayate is a quiet and caring young woman who possesses one of the most fearsome Lost Logia that the universe has ever known. Ranked SS (restricted to about A for routine operations in Lost Property Riot Force 6 due to bureaucratic limitations), the second highest rank that a mage can attain (with SSS as the highest possible rank), she has a vast expanse of power that even the TSAB has trouble handling after ten years in the service. Lieutenant Colonel Yagami is the commanding officer of Riot Force 6, which she started, and is aided by Reinforce II, her unison device.
Reinforce II (リインフォースII, Rīnfōsu Tsuvai?) (Reinforce Zwei)
Voiced by: Yukana
A cute, chibi character—approximately 30cm tall—that appears harmless, but is in fact a very strong reformatted Lost Logia. Easily annoyed but generally good-tempered, Reinforce II, Hayate's fully sentient unison device, is also her chief of staff.
Admiral Chrono Harlaown (クロノ・ハラオウン, Kurono Haraoun?) (Age 25)
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita
Commanding officer of the Arthra which is named after his mother, Admiral Lindy Harlaown, who stepped down in favour of a calm desk job. He is one of two people with the authority to remove the limiters on Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate and restore them to their true power levels; however, he can and will only do such in a dire state of emergency.
Second Lieutenant Vita (ヴィータ, Vīta?)
Voiced by: Asami Sanada
A member of Hayate's magical servants/family, the Wolkenritter, Vita is an eternal child, in both appearance and personality. Temperamental and vengeful, she works under Nanoha as sub-commander of the Stars Squad. She is named for the Opel Vita.
Signum (シグナム, Shigunamu?)
Voiced by: Kaori Shimizu
The First Lieutenant is the leader of the Wolkenritter, the dutiful Signum works as Fate's sub-commander in the Lightning Squad. She is named for the Opel Signum.
Shamal (シャマル, Shamaru?)
Voiced by: Ryoka Yuzuki
A soft-spoken member of the Wolkenritter that specializes in defense and healing. She is a sanitar officer. She is named for the Maserati Shamal.
Zafila (ザフィーラ, Zafīra?)
Voiced by: Kazuya Ichijō
The lone male member of the Wolkenritter, this wolf-man, a member of the support force, specializes in hand-to-hand combat. He is named for the Opel Zafira.
Yūno Scrya (ユーノ・スクライア, Yūno Sukuraia?)
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi
A Mage and Archeologist as early as the age of 9. He currently works for TSAB as the chief librarian of the Infinity Library. He is named for the Eunos series of cars.
[edit] New characters
Along with the new character designs, the series will introduce new characters. This new roster includes:
Private Subaru Nakajima (スバル・ナカジマ, Subaru Nakajima?) (Age 15)
Voiced by: Chiwa Saito
A young woman who appears to use the modern-Belka magic system and currently achieved Rank B, which is that of an average mage. Her intelligent device, Mach Caliber, is a pair of roller blades. She also possesses a second device, Revolver Knuckle, an armed device which is also equipped with a Cartridge System. The Revolver Knuckle once belonged to Subaru's mother, and comes in a pair, with Subaru's sister, Ginga, possessing the Revolver Knuckle for the left hand. Subaru was saved by Nanoha four years ago in a Lost Logia incident at an airport on Midchilda, and it was this incident that inspired her to join the Armed Forces. Subaru met Teana while in the military academy, and were paired up by their instructors due to the two being the only ones using non-standard devices. While at the academy, Subaru was also a victim of harsh criticism among her peers, due to her father being a higher up in the military and the assumption that she is getting special treatment. Subaru is extremely fast and strong, and had problems working alongside Teana during their training days as she had difficulty controlling her strength. Working under Nanoha as front attacker of the Stars Squad, she greatly idolizes her commander. Subaru is a bit naive about the military world -- for example, she didn't know about limiters or what a Lost Logia was -- which allows for exposition to both new viewers and those that have not read the manga.
Subaru is apparently named for two Fuji Heavy Industries divisions, Subaru and Nakajima Aircraft Company; her seemingly Japanese name is in katakana and Western naming format, as she is a native of Mid-Childa.
Private Teana Lanster (ティアナ・ランスター, Tiana Ransutā?) (Age 16)
Voiced by: Mai Nakahara
Subaru's pigtailed roommate. Her handgun-like device, Cross Mirage, uses a Cartridge System, and is considered a non-standard device, although she is schooled in the Mid-Childa magic system. The direction of the magic bullets that Cross Mirage fires can also be controlled by Teana. Teana is an orphan whom lost her parents when she was little, and was raised by her older brother ever since, though he is now dead. Teana met Subaru and were assigned roommates/partners in the military academy, and had been paired up ever since. Though she aspires to become a great Ground Combat Mage, her dream is to one day be able to take to the skies as a Sky Combat Mage. This feat will be very difficult for her because her magic ranking is considered too low and would make flight magic difficult. However, Teana is able to use magic to realizate illusions which is considered to be rare.[citation needed] This B-rated mage takes on the role of centre guard in the Stars Squad.
While the official website gives her name as "Teana", the opening animation calls her "Tiana". Her name appears to have been taken from the Nissan Teana.
Private Caro Ru Lushe (キャロ・ル・ルシエ, Kyaro Ru Rushie?) (Age 10)
Voiced by: Mikako Takahashi
A pink-haired little girl with jewels on her gloves (which may be a reference to Magic Knight Rayearth, as were the names of the Wolkenritter) that are actually a new type of device, a "Boost Device" named Kerykeion. Though she is not proficient in attack magics, she is good at boost magics and can perform the unique summon magics. Her unique talent as a dragon summoner was frightening to the Lushe clan, by which she was raised (apparently similar to the Scrya clan that Yūno Scrya lived with), and they banished her from the village. On the other extreme, the Mid-Childan army almost refused her because, though her talent was great, her skills were not refined. However, Fate T. Harlaown took her on herself. Caro appears to have a slight romantic interest in Erio. She is currently a Rank C mage, and is assigned to the Lightning Squad as fullback.
It has been speculated, given the naming conventions used for the other characters that are native to magical worlds, that her first and middle names together were modified from the Mazda Carol. There is also a motor vehicle named the Caro.
Private Erio Internațional (エリオ・モンディアル, Erio Mondīaru?) (Age 10)
Voiced by: Marina Inoue
A boy whom Fate takes in and cares for, and the guard wing of the Lightning Squad. He uses an armed device named Strada. It is a spear (electricity attribute), similar to Signum's sword (flare attribute). He uses the modern-Belka magic system, but is also able to perform some Mid-Childa mobile magics like Sonic Move. Erio was adopted by Lindy Harlaown four years prior to StrikerS, as Fate was legally too young to do so. He is being monitored by the villain as a creation of "Project F", which may be related to the "Project Fate" that created the character of the same name. He is currently a rank B mage and was also said to be an artificial human. Erio shows signs of a romantic interest in Caro.
Erio is named for the Ferrari Mondial.
Friedrich (フリードリヒ, Furīdorihi?)
Caro's dragonlike companion, raised by her since he hatched. He responds to Caro's commands and can grow to incredible size. Friedrich, unlike familiars, does not talk or have an alternate human or kemonomimi form.
Lutecia (ルーテシア, Rūteshia?)
Voiced by: Natsuko Kuwatani
A purple-haired girl with a strange mark on her forehead, she works for Jail Scaglietti and his mysterious superior and client. She is seen in the opening credits standing on a magic square, similar to the magic square of Caro's Mid-Childa summon magics, and uses a jeweled glove Boost Device like Caro does. According the her profile on the official website, her summons are Belka-based, which makes her different from Caro who uses the Mid-Childa system. Her summons conține the small robotic fly-like Insekt (インゼクト, Inzekuto?) and the human-sized Garyuu (ガリュー, Garyū?). Referred to in the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS Starter Book as simply "mystery girl". Lutecia's Boost Device is named Asclepius, and it has black and violet Boost Drives.
Her name comes from the Renault Lutecia.
Jail Scaglietti (ジェイル・スカリエッティ, Jeiru Sukarietti?)
Voiced by: Ken Narita
A highly dangerous criminal that Fate has been chasing for years, he specializes in Lost Logia, and his interests lie in "biological manipulation and control". He is creating the accidents surrounding the Relics, meaning to use them for an unknown purpose, and using the long-thought-lost Jewel Seeds from the first season to do it. According to Fate, he likes to toy with his pursuers, and is especially trying to provoke her and Nanoha. He may have an interest in Project Fate, given his observance of Fate and Erio, and his lair being filled with people in glass jars much like Alicia had been. He has an assistant called Uno (ウーノ, Ūno?), whom he talks to through a view screen.
His name come from the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.
Zest (ゼスト, Zesuto?)
Voiced by: Masaki Aizawa
Another antagonist on the same level as Lutecia, first mentioned in the sixth episode. He is also known as "Knight Zest" (騎士ゼスト, Kishi Zesuto?). He doesn't have much of a liking for Jail Scaglietti.
His name comes from the Honda ZEST.
